Many congratulations to Peter & Ashley Rowe whose Trewint herd at Menheniot, Liskeard, Cornwall recently won the National Herd Competition, beating 19 others across the country in this impressive achievement!

More than 100 members and guests assembled to be welcomed by Peter & Ashley, and by herd competition judges Edward Hawkins, Lionel Pascoe and Gordon Tully.

The tour around the cattle was timed perfectly to avoid the worst of Storm Agnes, and thanks to Ashley for keeping a close eye on the forecast.

The Trewint herd has a consistency and uniformity which is admirable, and which has led to many herd competition wins, national and regional, over the years.  This time, they gained top place for bulls and cows, and third for youngstock.  Their bull Trewint Carlos, by Northview Claudius, was Best Bull overall, and their other four bulls were all placed in the top 50%.

The cows all looked strong and functional, and calves at foot had promising shape and great growth.  Heifers to calve at two years of age to a Salers bull showed the strength of the breed, its growth and maturity; and after their first calving they will be put to a South Devon bull to produce pedigree stock.

After a lovely hog roast, cake and tea, a round of thanks were given by the President Robert Dimond, and the judges.

Any member may enter this annual competition provided that at least 75% of their herd is registered as pedigree.  Judging of the next competition will take place in September 2024.
