Stephen Allardyce, together with two sons and a stockman, run a 250-head suckler herd on the Douneside Estate in Aberdeenshire, and all stock bulls are bought based on breeding figures.  Ten bulls are used, and the latest purchase is a South Devon.

“Stephen made the decision to purchase the South Devon bull after a trial he carried out with 90 native cattle which he bought in to finish.  ‘Out of the 90 cattle I bought, I was quite surprised with the results I got back after slaughter, showing the South Devon to be the best native animal to finish.  They are also renowned for being great mothers and provide plenty of milk.’  Stephen has started to cross the bull onto his Simmental cross heifers and hopes to bring some new blood into the herd, using heifer calves as replacements.”
